OrgRec

A native macOS workbench for documented pipe-organ recording and independent audio analysis.

OrgRec turns an instrument specification into a recording roadmap. It combines multichannel capture with session planning, live checks, review and research-package export. The published release described here is 0.3.2.

  • Multichannel 24-bit PCM Broadcast Wave recording through Core Audio.
  • Equipment, microphone geometry and session records.
  • Non-destructive analysis, segmentation and sustained-loop inspection.
  • Editable projects with checked VAO import and export.

The 0.3.2 release also analyses existing audio without a microphone or recording project. Waveform, spectrogram, pitch and partial views support inspection, while exports retain analysis parameters and provenance. VAO 0.5 export and an offline POD 1.6 projection connect recording work to the wider ecosystem.

Two ways into the application

TaskStarting materialResult to inspect
Plan and recordAn instrument specification, a session plan and a connected capture chain.Documented takes linked to the intended recording roadmap.
Analyse existing audioAn existing audio file, without requiring a recording project.Signal views and analysis exports whose settings and provenance remain available.

For a new session, the value of the application lies in connecting the specification to the recording sequence. A list of completed files is less informative than a record of which note, stop, repetition and configuration each take belongs to. Review and export should retain those connections rather than treating the folder as a collection of unrelated sounds.

How to read an analysis

A waveform helps locate events and inspect levels over time. A spectrogram shows how frequency content changes within the chosen analysis settings. Pitch and partial views offer further measurements, but their interpretation still depends on signal quality, selected regions and method. A visually stable estimate should be checked against the relevant passage and the question being asked.

Keep analysis settings with exported figures or tables. A screenshot alone rarely preserves enough context to compare another take: selection, channel, time range and parameter choices can all matter. When describing a result, identify the original recording and distinguish measurements of that recording from statements about the instrument under other playing or acoustic conditions.

Before moving a project between tools

Check the target application’s supported VAO contract and capabilities. OrgRec’s export support does not imply that an older Unity or Blender importer can execute every declared experience. Preserve the original project and a fixed export as separate artifacts so that an interchange problem does not remove the session’s working record.

Analyze one file before building a project

The published 0.3.2 release provides a standalone Analyze Audio entry point. Open a file, select a useful excerpt if needed, and inspect waveform, spectrogram, pitch and partials. This route does not require a populated instrument catalogue or a microphone configuration. It is useful for exploratory inspection while retaining uncertainty about a file’s original capture conditions.

Export a structured result when a later analysis needs values, and a figure or PDF when communicating the inspected view. Keep the excerpt and provenance checksums with the result. The visual report, numerical output and audio excerpt support different forms of scrutiny; none substitutes for acquisition information that was never recorded.
