The doctoral research

Musikinstrumente im virtuellen Raum.

Strategien zur Digitalisierung von akustischen Kulturgütern am Beispiel der Orgel und Konzepte eines interaktiven Zugangs zu Virtuellen Akustischen Objekten.

Dominik Ukolov submitted this dissertation to the Faculty of History, Art and Area Studies at Leipzig University on 11 September 2026. It situates MODAVIS at the intersection of systematic musicology, organology and digital humanities.

Research scope

  • Multimodal documentation and the critical interpretation of digital representations.
  • A source-aware research data ecosystem and versioned organological data.
  • An exchange and preservation standard for Virtual Acoustic Objects.
  • Technical evaluation and reference cases spanning an organ, a mechanical instrument and a bell.

The notebooks introduce this work and connect to released resources. The submitted manuscript is not redistributed here. The submission date is not presented as a degree-award date.

From representation to access

The dissertation investigates two connected transformations: how material and documentary evidence becomes a digital representation, and how that representation becomes an interactive encounter. The first raises questions about identity, selection, measurement and source criticism. The second raises questions about rendering, control, perception and the communication of uncertainty.

How the contributions fit together

Research strandWhere to explore it here
Multimodal documentationThe fieldwork notebook connects instrument state, acquisition and retained signals.
Accountable knowledgeThe research and ontology notebooks explain evidence, assertions and editorial decisions.
Exchangeable representationsThe VAO notebook explains semantic releases, carriers and declared capabilities.
Empirical and technical casesReference objects and software guides identify the demonstrations and their limits.

The Cuntz positive organ is the principal instrument case. The Ariston and the Landshut bell introduce contrasting systems of information, excitation and control. They test how far the documentation and exchange approach transfers while keeping the physical models specific to each instrument family.

Read the contribution and its limits together

The technical evaluations do not establish participant-based judgements of listening or playability. PAMT remains a conceptual architecture with outstanding implementation and field-validation work. The project’s value is therefore best assessed at the level of each documented contribution: a released contract, a reproducible dataset, a bounded computation or a demonstrated interaction.

The public releases can be studied independently of access to the submitted manuscript. Their own documentation, versions and citations provide the appropriate starting points for reuse. These notebooks offer a connected explanation of that material; they are not a substitute for the full argument, methods and evidence of the dissertation.

Read the argument and reported results

The expanded research notebook follows the dissertation from its central translation problem to the case studies and evaluation framework. It gives printed-page references for numerical findings and separates documented technical results from proposed listening, usability, expert-review and field-validation studies. The software guides describe the audited releases and source versions independently, so a later implementation is not silently treated as evidence from the submitted thesis.
