Regions are not replacement recordings#

A sustained sample or a loop can be defined as a region of an original take. Keeping that relation allows another researcher to inspect the surrounding signal and revisit an editing decision.

Preservation and playback serve different needs#

A convenient playback package may contain only the assets needed by one application. A preservation release must also retain the information required to understand the selection and its provenance. VAO separates semantic release identity from the choice of carrier.

Use a stable identity for every take#

A take belongs to a session and a documented instrument configuration. Give it a stable identity before generating analysis files, excerpts or playback assets. Human-readable filenames help during recording, but the export should also preserve the relationships that explain those names. A renamed or copied file must not silently become a different observation.

Keep review decisions alongside the signal#

During review, distinguish what happened in the recording from what you decide to use. Background noise, an interrupted note or an unexpected register state is an observation. Accepting a take, choosing a region or setting a loop is an editorial decision. Recording both lets a later reader revisit the choice without guessing from the final excerpt.

Close the session with a small audit#

• Check that the planned captures and actual files agree, recording omissions rather than inventing completeness.
• Keep originals and derived files distinguishable and verify that copied bytes still match their checksums.
• Export the session metadata with the audio and preserve the meaning of each channel.
• Review rights and the intended public subset before preparing the preservation package.

A successful export is the beginning of reuse, not the end of documentation. The next user needs to know which resource is original, which is prepared for playback and which transformations connect them. The VAO carrier model can package those roles without collapsing them into a single anonymous sample library.
